November 29, 2018

Dear Family,

Monday, I sent home the permission slip for our 1st grade field trip to The Thinkery.  Please fill out and return the yellow form and the front and back of the green form.  Cost is $7 per student.  Please send in exact cash or check payable to Sommer Elementary.  (Be sure to include your driver's license number and child’s first name on the check.) If you wish to volunteer, please indicate that on the bottom of the yellow form.  You will also need to fill out the district online volunteer form if not previously done this school year.  I will then contact you about chaperone payment.

Next Week...
Math: We will be working with 2D/3D shapes and examining their properties. Students will be able to identify & distinguish between solid figures that can roll, stack, and/or slide.

Science: We will wrap up our unit on the physical properties of objects in which we observed, compared, described, and sorted the components of soil by size, texture and color, identified and described natural sources of water and how rocks, soil, and water were used to make products.  At the end of the week, we will begin our unit on weather by learning about and recording the relative temperature.

Reading/Writing:  We will continue our work with fairy tales and their elements. We will be focusing on Cinderella and the various versions included fractured fairy tales. In writing, students will continue creating their own fairy tale and learning strategies to help them make the story more detailed.

Balanced Literacy: In phonics, the students will be working on recognizing the beginning and ending sounds in words as well as changing those sounds to make new words.
In social studies, the students will be exploring Aesop’s Fables.  They will learn about the lessons that each story teaches as well as make connections, inferences and address any questions they may still have regarding the story.

Campus News…
-It’s that time of the year again!  Science Fair is right around the corner.  Join us in the library for Science Research Night on Wednesday, December 12th from 5:30-6:30. We will have books, rubrics and some science project examples displayed to help your child get in their scientific mindset.  All grade levels may participate, however, only grades 3-5 will be judged and may progress to the regional fair. Science fair projects will be due Friday, January 11 no later than 7:35 am. Students will take projects to their classroom.  Judging will take place on Monday, January 14.
We will need Science Fair Judges on Wednesday, January 14th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.   No science background needed! Your job will be to talk with students about their science fair project, and fill out simple judging rubrics.   There will be a brief training from 8:00-8:15 that day.   It is OK if you cannot help the entire 4 hours, just let us know your availability in your email.  Contact Laure Stroh at Laure_Stroh@roundrockisd.org.
