Policies and Procedures

Attendance

A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is key. School begins promptly at 7:40am. Students that arrive after 7:40am will be counted tardy and will be required to sign-in on a Tardy log in the classroom.  If your child is ill, please call the office (512-704-0600) and inform us of your child’s absence and the reason for it. This is for your child’s safety. If a student must leave early for a doctor’s appointment, go to the office to sign them out and they will call me and I will send your child to the office. I am unable to release a student without being notified from the office. Never send another person to pick up your child without informing me or the secretary. Pupils should arrive between 7:10 and 7:40am. Students should not arrive prior to 7:10 AM since supervision by the school staff is not available. No child or parent should be in the building before this time. School begins promptly at 7:40 AM and afternoon dismissal is at 2:50 PM. Students that arrive after 7:40am will be counted tardy. Students will be dismissed according to form of transportation home. Please see additional information under transportation. Side doors are for student and staff entrance only. Parents that wish to escort their children through the building must enter through the front entrance only. Parents must say their goodbye’s to children in the main hallway. Parents are not permitted in grade level pods without signing in at the front office.

Birthdays

We love them and love to celebrate them! If invitations are to be passed out for a party, an invitation must be given to the entire class. This keeps children from having hurt feelings. The state law allows us to celebrate birthdays in our classroom, but not in the cafeteria. Guidelines limit the types of food that we are allowed to distribute. If you would like to provide treats for your child’s birthday, feel free to send them in the morning and they will be shared after lunch. Please remember that we are only allowed three parties a year, so let’s limit this to a simple celebration. We will celebrate summer birthdays during the last few weeks of school.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clothing

Since the children attend PE almost every day (and recess every day), PE teachers require tennis shoes to be worn to school. NO SANDALS/FLIP-FLOPS should be worn to school. Whenever possible, we go to recess, so please dress your child in appropriate clothing for the weather. Many times the students have similar clothing and cannot distinguish their owner, so please label all jackets, sweaters, coats, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daily Folders

A folder will go home each day with your child that will contain a calendar indicating if there were any behavior issues for the day and any notes/important information from the classroom or the school.  Your child's folder must return to school each day with parent/guardian initials/signature.

Communication

Please feel free to contact me at any time via e-mail or phone. Keep in mind that I will not be able to check e-mail or answer the phone during instructional periods but will get back with you as soon as I can.

Transportation

If your child will be going home another way than specified on the first week of school, a note MUST be sent to school stating how your child will be getting home on that particular day. If there is not a note, then your child will be sent home as his/her regular dismissal dictates. You may change your child’s dismissal area at any time throughout the year by sending a note and stating it will be a permanent change. If your child’s transportation home changes during the school day and you were unable to send a note, you must contact the office and they will notify the teacher. Most often, e-mail and phone messages are not checked until after students are dismissed at the end of the school day.

Your child is a Walker if:
• You will WALK up to the school to pick them up
Your child is a Car Rider if:
• You will drive up to the curb, stay in your car, and your child will get in your car
Your child is a Bus Rider if:
• Your child will get on a yellow RRISD School Bus
Your child is a Daycare if:
• Your child will meet a representative from a Daycare facility (not just a neighbor or friend) and will board Daycare Transportation at the school or attend YMCA.

Visitors

Sommer has a policy that ALL GUESTS (including familiar faces) are required to check in at the school office. Sommer welcomes and encourages family involvement. It is important to remember that while this may seem inconvenient to frequent visitors, it is the goal and responsibility of the school to create a safe learning environment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toys

Toys should NOT be brought to school. We have many materials for all children to use. Toys from home can get lost or broken and cause great sadness. Toys brought to school may be confiscated, so, please help keep them at home.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snacks

Students are asked to bring a snack to eat before lunch.  We ask that it is a healthy one and some suggestions are: pretzels, crackers, raisins, small carrots, fruit, etc.  We ask that you do not send: candy, cookies, and chips as they do not coincide with the intention of snack (prevent hunger and provide brain boosting energy to allow for academic focus and success). "Junk food" type snacks are also generally made with artificial flavoring and/or coloring that rubs off onto classroom materials that children are using during snack time.  (We do not stop our learning in order to eat a snack.)  Thanks for your support!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Homework

1st grade students are expected to read every night for 20 minutes.

How can I help my child to build comprehension?
Great questions to ask when reading home readers or library books with your child:
What did that(event) remind you of?
Can you make any connections?
What do you think will happen next?
What do you know about this even though the author did not tell you?
What did you picture when you read that sentence or page?
What do you think this story will be about?
Now what do you think this story is about?
Now that we have finished the book, what do you think this story was really about?
I am wondering...., what are you wondering?
Why did you choose this book?
Is this book the right fit for you? How do you know?
Who would you recommend this book to and why?
*Home Readers will not start right at the beginning of the year. I will begin sending them home after our reading workshop is off and running and DRA testing is complete.

Volunteers

Room Mom:
Sign up with PTA. They will be sending home a form Tuesday. Once a decision is made, I will notify you through email and on the web.

Class Parties:
Volunteers will help set up, monitor and help clean up for the parties. We will have 3 parties (Winter Party, Valentine's Party, and End of Year Party). Dates and times will come later. Our room mom will be your contact if you wish to volunteer with help or supplies.

Field Trips:
We will be taking 1 field trip this year. If you wish to join us, you will need to provide your own transportation. Sadly, parents are not allowed on to ride with us on the bus. A permission slip for all field trips will come home with your child. There will be a place to indicate that you will be joining us. Please let us know if your plans change, as we will plan to give you a small group of students to assist with.

Water Bottles

Each student will need a water bottle to take to school each day. I recommend one that you can refill each morning. To prevent them from getting lost, water bottles should be labeled with your child's name. ***Water Bottles must contain water only. Students will not be permitted to drink out of their water bottle in the classroom if it contains other liquids (milk, coolaid, etc.)
