October 24, 2018

Dear Family,

Students are invited to dress up as their favorite story book character on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Please be sure to send the book or a copy of the book cover as well.  Students may not bring any pretend weapons or wear masks that cover his/her face.  Thank you for your support.

Tuesday, I sent home directions for an at home social studies holiday timeline project.  It is due back Nov. 12.  Students will need to choose a holiday or tradition that your family celebrates (Diwali, Passover, Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving, etc.) Students will create a timeline that depicts the important events associated with the celebration.  The timeline may cover a day or several days based on the holiday chosen.  Parents are encouraged to assist their child with this project, but not do it for them.  The timeline should include the time of day or dates clearly written and placed in sequential order.  They will be presenting their timeline to the class and need to know the information they have written and be able to discuss the holiday with knowledge and comfort.  There is also a sheet titled “My Holiday Traditions” that should be completed and turned in as well.  Please practice having your child share his/her kid created timeline with others before it is due on November 12.  If you have any questions, please email.

Next Week...
Math:  Students will be focusing on time to the hour and representing it on digital and analog clocks. Students will also identify the minute hand and the hour hand on a clock.

Science: This week we will focus on ways objects can move (round and round, straight line, back and forth, zig-zag, up and down, fast and slow).  Students are asked to bring in an object that can move by October 31.  An assessment over magnets and patterns of movement will be given late in the week.

Reading:   Students will continue learning and identifying text features in nonfiction books and their purpose.

Writing:  We will begin a three-week study on How-To writing. This week, students will be introduced to How-To’s by making something hands-on and learning how to list supplies and materials along with the importance of including detailed steps in their writing.

Balanced Literacy: In Social Studies, students will be reviewing past, present, and future. In Phonics, students will be working on recognizing and using high frequency words.
