August 24, 2018

Dear Family,
Your kids are doing a great job learning expectations and making new friends!  We are enjoying getting to know each other in our morning meetings.

Please be sure to initial your child’s green daily folder daily.  If there are any papers in the green daily folder, please remove.  Those are yours to keep.  I do not use a “Thursday Folder” since I send home the green folder home daily.

If you have not sent in your order/payment for Scholastic News, please do so by August 28.  We will use these weekly magazines in class.  The class t-shirt order is voluntary, but we do ask students to wear these during field trips and on field day so that they are easily identified as being in my class.  Thanks for your support.

For Friday’s science lesson on August 31, I am asking that students bring in an object from home that is round and will fit in their backpack (example: ball, cotton ball, marble, rock, etc.)  Thanks so much!

Next week…
Math: We will continue with number sense up to 20. Students will be asked to identify words associated with math (tallies, #s, addition, etc). Students will also model counting and generating numbers up to 20 by using different tools (ten frames, math racks, number paths, etc).

Science: We will finish up our unit on I am a Scientist and move on to classifying matter.  Students will begin to compare and classify objects based on their observable properties  such as: size, color, shape, relative mass, and texture. Students are asked to bring in an object from home that is round and will fit in their backpack (example: ball, cotton ball, marble, rock, etc.) for Friday’s lesson on August 31.

Language Arts:
Reading: We will discuss the expectations for how to shop for books in our classroom library.  Students will also learn about the different ways to read a book (read the pictures, read the words).  We will be practicing the different story elements through our read alouds to get us ready to retell a story.

Writing: Students will be introduced to the parts of writing workshop. Students will learn routines and expectations, along with why we write, where ideas come from and the tools we use.

Balanced Literacy: Students will learn about important historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Sam Houston, and Martin Luther King, Jr. and their impact on their community/state/nation.
